Central Dispatch is new to our area having begun operations from its new Buena Vista home in the fall of 1998. On duty the morning of Jan. 3 were Heather Pelter and Mary Wood, who were joined as the fateful day of the horrendous wreck on Interstate 81 by Blake Donald, Marni Mikels and Lori Condry.

Interim director Steve Reese allowed this reporter to listen to the 911 tape recorded that morning. Pelter has been a dispatcher for just over six months, while Wood is a 23-year veteran.

"There's a lot of personal responsibility that goes with dispatching," said Wood. "Our job is to get all the people out in the field all the help we can. I'm so happy that all our rescue squads and fire departments come together in times of crisis like that Sunday morning."

Pelter recalled, "I just prayed I'd do it right. It was my first major catastrophe as a dispatcher. I'm proud of the way we all worked together in this tough situation."
