Kendrick Extrication Device

We use the KED when a patient is involved in a motor vehicle accident or when the patient is in a confined space such as a cave.  The KED maintains spinal alignment and helps to prevent any undue movement in the case of spinal injury.

Applying the KED

There are four straps that wrap around the patient.  Three in the front and one that loops around the legs.  The "wings" wrap around the chest wall and the head, providing the support needed for a safe extrication.  The foam block acts as a space filler, packing any gaps between the patient and the KED.  An elastic band secures the head to the KED preventing any lateral motion of the neck.
